AFS is the oldest and largest scientific and professional fisheries society in the world. Founded in 1870, AFS now comprises more than 9,000 scientists and managers in 70 different countries. The AFS mission is to conserve aquatic natural resources and further the professional development of its members.

Our first annual meeting was in New York in 1870. Since then, these annual meetings have served as the premiere gathering place for fisheries scientists and professionals and as the best communication venue for the exchange of ideas on issues ranging widely from biology to policy. Attendance at these meetings has been growing steadily and now ranges around 2,000, including many students and young professionals.
