The Middle East is regarded as a significant regional market for many food products. Approximately 90% of the requirements are met through imports due to the unsuitable climate, limited water resources and uncultivable soil conditions. The collective annual food bill for the GCC region alone hovered in the $8-9 billion range during 2003-04, of which the U.A.E. share is about 60 percent due to the presence of a large expatriate community, having a noticeable impact on the demand, supply and quality of food and related products.
