A common global approach to competition policy and regulation remains elusive. The multitude of policy jurisdictions and divergent national frameworks has hindered the path to convergence upon an ‘optimal’ set of standards, but to what extent is this a desirable goal? What value would a universal set of standards and procedures have for regulators and anti-trust enforcement, and what are the potential risks? The annual Chatham House Competition Policy conference will consider these questions, as well as key developments in global competition policy and the marketplace. Discussions will also assess the principles of ‘better practice,’ the effects of global mergers on the application of divergent anti-trust measures, the direction of policy and prospects for convergence in established and emerging competition regimes, and the effects of e-commerce on competition policies. Speaker highlights include: Renata Hesse, Deputy Assistant Attorney General, Antitrust Division, US Department of Justice Lv Jiang, Director and Head of Competition Policy, Ministry of Commerce, China Terrell McSweeny, Commissioner, Federal Trade Commission US The Honorable Mr Justice Roth, President, Competition Appeal Tribunal, UK Andrea Coscelli, Executive Director, Markets and Mergers, Competition and Markets Authority David Zapolsky, General Counsel, Amazon Kaarli Eichhorn, Global Executive Counsel, Competition Law and Policy, GE To enable as open a debate as possible, this conference will be held under the Chatham House Rule.
