Theme
Why is today’s society, despite its disinterest in science and technology, desperate for interdisciplinary minds? It is perhaps because the integration of the two seemingly different may lead to a key to solving the problems of modernized society. The solutions to the problems that evolved from the rapid development of technology, such as internet addiction and exposure of personal details, may only be unraveled when multiple disciplines are integrated to create a new “perspective”.

Then how should an ideal fusion of knowledge be achieved? Simply having motley of unrefined knowledge cannot be the solution (decreasing the number of internet addicts require more than understanding psychology and IT technology). To achieve a genuine integration, scientists, sociologists, and artists at the frontier of different disciplines should constantly cross academic borders and experiment—even struggle—with the unfamiliar.

Basing on this fundamental concept, ICISTS-KAIST 2012 proposes the consilience of science & technology and other disciplines as an answer to various social problems. Some topics will include truly original implementation of up-to-date technology into humanities and some will pose debatable discussions. Irrespective of students’ academic backgrounds, ICISTS-KAIST promises all delegates that integration of science and technology into society will lead to insights with values beyond our imagination.
