Biofuels could reduce aircraft emissions by 80%

Air transport moves over 2.4 billion passengers annually and it’s growing every year, so making this industry more sustainable and lowering emissions is imperative. Biofuels have great potential to help the aviation industry reduce carbon emissions in line with IATA’s industry target of 50% reduction by 2050. Successful flights on biofuels blends have now been tested by many commercial airlines, demonstrating that biofuels can be mixed with traditional jet fuels safely and efficiently. Industry experts predict that they could be used in commercial flights in the next 3-5 years.
Several challenges must be overcome before aviation biofuels can become a commercial reality, including certification, scaling up for industrial production, ensuring sustainability and pricing.
