Heavy crude oils provide an interesting situation for the economics of petroleum development. The resources of heavy oil in the world are more than twice those of conventional light crude oil. Production of heavy oil is becoming more common in many countries. Oil sands reserves have only recently been considered to be part of the world‘s oil reserves as higher oil prices and new technology enable them to be profitably extracted and upgraded to usable products. Enhanced Oil Recovery in Heavy Oil is an enormous opportunity, with total global EOR recovery potential estimated to exceed 750 billion barrels of oil.
