TO contemplate the Atlantic Ocean whilst participating in a scientific, cultural or social gathering is one of the rare privileges awaiting those who choose the Canary Islands Convention Centre for these events.
When the Catalonian architect, Óscar Tusquets, drew up the project, he undoubtedly made the most of the spectacular setting provided by the city at the western end of the Las Canteras Beach. He conceived a building that is a far cry from the predominant tendency towards uniformity in buildings of this nature, but evocative of the city's past and present architectural styles.
Walking through its rooms and corridors, hall, stairways and terraces is to walk symbolically beneath the waves. To Tusquets's singular architectural creation, the no less original work of the sculptor from Gran Canaria, Juan Bordes, adds a masterly re-creation of the marine fauna of the Las Canteras Beach on all four sides of the building and in its interior.![]()
