Objectives
• Summarize the current understanding of the pathophysiology of acute coronary syndromes;
• Explain management strategies for acute myocardial infarction and describe the major clinical trials that have shaped
those strategies;
• List the various noninvasive modalities available to evaluate coronary artery and valvular heart disease and describe their
merits, complementary roles, roles in patient management, and prognostic values;
• Interpret both common and complex 12-lead electrocardiograms and analyze subtle yet clinically important findings relevant
to the board examination;
• Describe the current medical and surgical treatment options in patients with congestive heart failure including the major
clinical trials that have shaped practice behaviors.
• Identify the pathophysiology, evaluation, modalities, and treatment options in patients with valvular heart disease including a
comprehensive review of echocardiography;
• Evaluate and treat patients with complex dysrhythmias and describe the indications for electrophysiology testing, pacemaker
implantation, and ICD placement in these patients;
• Recognize and appropriately treat the clinical scenarios in cardiovascular medicine used in the examinations for Board
Certification in Cardiovascular Disease.
