Australian PE: A sustainable future?

Australasia survived the global financial crisis (GFC) outfall relatively unscathed thanks to its resources and fairly self-sufficient domestic economy. For the private equity system to have a sustainable future, however, takes more than just that.

Uncertainty in global stock markets has hindered exits, which in turn has made it more difficult for general partners (GPs) to cash out and distribute returns to limited partners (LPs). At the same time, PE is also competing for LPs’ allocation with asset classes with higher liquidity, those that deliver fixed income, and/or those that offer a fee structure and terms with which LPs are happier.

Key themes include:

* Where will new funds come from?
* Will there be any shake-out in the industry?
* How will the supers and the pension fund system develop with:
- the implementation of the Cooper Review;
- increased contributions to 12% by 2019;
- the new MySuper system and
- the ageing population?
