The service life of an offshore installation is limited by the structural integrity of the support. The structural integrity is mainly governed by the fatigue resistance of critical welded details. For eg.in an FPSO installation these details are among others pallet stool brackets welds and longitudinal weld connections to web frames and to bulkheads in ballast tanks. The application of fatigue life improvement techniques is gaining popularity in the last years & Classification Societies have been focusing more and more on these and the latest document dealing with it .

In addition, Fatigue life improvement techniques can contribute to reduce maintenance cost by avoidance of recurring weld repairs. These life extension techniques are the only remedy when higher stresses and/or fatigue cracks occur in a structure with many years remaining service life.

This course will give a fresh and practical input in the way naval architects and engineers can use weld improvement methods to safeguard the structural integrity and extend the fatigue life of offshore installations without the use of hot-work. By implementing the three pillar of the life extension concept, participants will see how Fatigue Assessment, Inspection and Weld Improvement Methods can be combined to enable new possibilities in life extension projects.
