Many forms of renewable energy are at an early stage of development. Others such as wind power are considered established but their rapidly increasing scale and range of applications demand further developments. Advances in magnetic materials and innovations in electromechanical drives are at the heart of some remarkable improvements in the efficiency, scale and cost-effectiveness of machines.

The seminar will present some of the latest developments illustrating novel devices such as magnetic gears, advanced materials such as superconductors and large-scale application of existing machine forms. There will also be an opportunity to visit the new wave / tide simulation tank where novel marine devices are developed on a model scale before trial deployment at sea.
