Growth of electric power consumption gives evidence of economy growth and Turkmenistan is a perfect example to that. In accordance with the national program of “Strategy of economic, political and cultural development of Turkmenistan for the period upto 2020” production of power will significantly increase due to expansion of the domestic consumption and export. In 2020 the forecasting level of power production in Turkmenistan will achieve 26, 38 bln, kilowatt hours, that is 1,7 times more than in 2009, power production in 2009 was 15,61 bln. kilowatt hours.

2. Currently, Turkmen electric power is exported to Afghanistan, Iran, Turkey, Tajikistan and Kazakhstan. In order to increase export capacity of Turkmen power system it is envisaged to construct HV line of 400 kV “Mary - Mashat” (Iran) and “Balkanabad – Gondbad” (Iran). Construction of these lines will allow implementing of planned power transmission to Iran and in Turkey by transit through Iranian power system. In order to increase export of power to Afghanistan the issue of construction of 500 HV line Turkmenistan – Afghanistan is under consideration for increase of export volume of power to Northern provinces of neighboring Afghanistan.
